A popular quiz question is: what’s the capital of Australia? If you answered Sydney or Melbourne then it’s time to discover the real answer – Canberra. With Parliament House at its core, Canberra fans out across both sides of Lake Burley Griffin to reveal a diverse mix of museums, restaurants and bars filled with curious tourists, political persons and public servants.
Canberra was created as a solution to Australia’s 2 largest cities squabbling over the right to become the national capital. The Limestone Plains region in New South Wales was chosen as the site for present day Canberra. It was a good choice for nature lovers as it is surrounded by bushland, mountain ranges and, more recently, wineries.
The National Gallery, National Museum and National Library of Australia highlight Canberra’s cultural riches. Other notable institutions to visit are the High Court of Australia and the National Film and Sound Archive that stockpiles a collection of Australia’s early radio, television and film history.
The military also plays a significant role here with many training facilities for the army such as the Australian Defence Force Academy. An unforgettable experience is attending the Anzac Day Dawn service at The Australian War Memorial.
Australia’s cultural capital with a political punch has many hotels, motels and apartments on Booking.com for that city trip, business jaunt or family holiday.

Canberra is a great medium sized city with lots of things to do. It has all of the tourist attractions like Parliament, Museums, Art Galleries etc as well as some beautiful natural attractions and scenic drives only a short distance on the outskirts of the city. It has many great restaurants and shopping centres. There is good public transport.

Canberra is home to national treasures including the War Memorial, Parliament House, National Museum and the National Gallery. The central city area is based on Lake Burley-Griffen and provides very pleasant backdrop to significant monuments and buildings. We noted that since our last visit that night life in the central city area has improved greatly due to more community art displays and dining places.

Canberra has a lot of places of interest to visitors.
Canberra has a lot of places of interest to visitors.
I visited the Australian War Memorial, Museum of Australian Democracy, Portrait Gallery, Australian Archives, and National Gallery.
I used the public bus system to get around. Ensure that you check the bus timetable, as buses do not run very frequently.

Lots of things to see - Museum, art gallery etc, all close to each other. Some things are further afield and worth seeing, so a car is very useful/necessary. I discovered the buses don't take cash and I would have to apply for a travel card 7-10 days in advance to get it in the mail! They don't take credit cards either (apparently that is coming in November 2024, but not much use to me when my friends weren't able to give me a lift as planned!) I can't believe a city that wants visitors makes it IMPOSSIBLE to go anywhere by bus or light train!

Canberra is an easy getaway from Sydney.
Canberra is an easy getaway from Sydney.
Found enough to do for a couple of days and a good variety of restaurants and venues.
Very relax place to just explore and take a break away with some interesting places to see and visit for different reasons.
Also there are plenty of outdoor things to do, did go Mountain biking as the tracks are awesome.
Worth a visit, when you can
This place was just amazing. Had everything you could expect from a good AirBnb, at Booking.com pricing. I’m actually very impressed with how homely it was, and accommodating for my little family. Quite a small living area but we weren’t there much in the day as there was a lot to do in walking distance.
Had a high chair, porta cot and a pretty good coffee machine for the early mornings with the baby. 😅
We travel a fair bit and this place really impressed me. Very happy customer.
We booked two apartments for a family wedding and the staff generously upgraded one of our rooms to be a high rise apartment with a great view, and directly opposite the 2nd large apartment. The rooms were excellent and the staff very friendly and very helpful. Location (near Lonsdale St) and parking were excellent. The below ground parking was generous and easy to access. We will definitely return for a foodie weekend / week and general Canberra holiday. Thank you Pacific Suites !
I really like this hotel, quite even it is in the city center. It's close to canberra center (mall) and lot of restaurants around and bar. Walkable to Alinga tram station, CMAG and other tourist spot can be visited by bus, there's bus station in front of this hotel. The room is so clean, and the mini kitchen is equipped with things you need to cook if you're on a budget. Also, we came so early around 11am and they let us checked in without additional cost. Thank you!
I stayed here with my family members on a girls' road trip. Overall the beds were comfortable and the room was a good size. The breakfast was tasty and the hotel has a very interesting design and was close to where we needed to be in Canberra (very close to the Bus Depot Markets and Manuka). The complimentary tea and coffee as well as water and sweets downstairs were a bonus as well as the free parking as we drove down from Sydney. The staff were friendly and helpful.
The ambiance of the hotel is like a home away from home. After getting the hang of using the pin code to open the room door, it was very easy to enter the room without a room key. The room was clean, comfortable and spacious with simple furnishings. Great that there was ample space in the car park and it is free. Very convenient to have a Coles supermarket next door.
Good value accommodation for Canberra especially if you have a car.
The hotel itself appears charming. The friendly staff makes it even better. The family room was great. It was huge with 2 rooms (both with ensuite) joining together by having the mini bar in the middle. The coffee machine and real milk was a great touch. Lastly but most importantly, the bed and pillows were very comfortable. Truly wish we could have stayed longer. Thank you and keep up the great work and we shall see you again 😊
The hotel is at an excellent location, with everything from restaurants and shops right there on a short walk. The hotel promised to be pet friendly and they were not only friendly but amazingly friendly! Fully recommended to travel with your pets as both the room and facilities in general are great. They had some goodies in the entrance to welcome the pets (treats, wet wipes, doggy bags) that were also great!
The hotel was only a short drive from attractions such as the National Art Gallery and Bus Depot Markets. The room was clean and spacious, including a safe in the wardrobe, and the bed was comfortable. A very good breakfast (included in our booking) which made the stay value for money. We enjoyed a hearty meal at the German Club which is conveniently next to the hotel. Off street parking was also included.
Hotel has fantastic art deco era ambience. It is spacious which lovely grounds and the rooms are large and well appointed.
I think it is Canberras oldest hotel and moderately expensive. Location is the best if you want ot visit the parliamentary zone.
Hotel staff helped to clean up my car after the window was broken by a robber during the night.
The room has a full sized bath!
The atmosphere was great with a real feel of traditional hotel. The staff were friendly and helpful. Ashleigh was so lovely to deal with and booked us in a suitable room.
The location is fantastic for visiting Parliament house and museums.
We will certainly stay here again if we were to visit Canberra in the future.
A first class hotel in a quiet yet convenient location on the outskirts of Canberra. The hotel is large enough to have great facilities such as a well equipped gym yet small enough to give that boutique hotel feel. Great rooms with all amenities and very welcoming staff make this my preferred hotel when visiting Canberra.
The Village Hostels Canberra offers a fantastic stay with friendly staff and a central location. The common areas are well-designed, the kitchen is fully equipped, and the rooms are comfortable and clean. I highly recommend it for a memorable and convenient stay in Canberra
Comfortable, clean hotel in a good location (although, in Canberra you do have to drive to most main attractions). Friendly, helpful, efficient staff. Easy book in and check out. Excellent free in-house movies.
Very nice hotel at a good price on this occasion. Just a 1 night visit, we didn't eat the hotel but the veggie menus looked great! Usually this hotel is booked out when we are in Canberra.
Very good location, only a short walk to the City Centre! We left the car in the hotel parking and just walked our way around Canberra. A simple basic hotel but well priced.
The room was clean and comfortable. The hotel is well positioned in Canberra. The staff are friendly and efficient.
The buffet breakfast was excellent and good value.
