The Garth was built in 1729 by a local carpenter, Thomas Stanford as the former Lingfeld workhouse at a cost of 290 pounds. It provided basic schooling and work for boys making shoes, hats, bonnets and waistcoats. The building was sold by the Charity Commissioners in 1850 to Mr Cross, who divided it into 6 cottages. The house was then bought in 1918 by the local historian and a successful financier, Mr Stanley Hazell, who commissioned the distinguished ‘Arts and Crafts’ architect , antiquarian and a garden designer, Walter H Godfrey to convert the building into a single house. Godfrey also designed the “Pleasure Grounds” as the 9 acre historic gardens were described. The Garth Guest Suite, a studio cottage, is surrounded by the Garth Pleasure Grounds with fairy tale trails. The Garth is Grade II* listed. There are 4 other cottages, which are let on a long term basis. The historic grounds benefit from an outdoor unheated swimming pool and a hot tub. Both use ozone and UV filtering systems with minimal chlorine and both are closed during the winter period. The Himalayan Salt Sauna is open all year round. We operate a booking system for some of our facilities.

We welcome single people, couples, families with children up to a max 4 people. The studio cottage has a double sofa bed, which can accommodate easily two kids. There are 9 acre gardens surrounding the main house with woodland fairy tale and animal trails. The cottage has a wood burning stove, fridge, microwave, kettle and a toaster. We also provide cutlery, plates and cups during your stay. We usually buy some provisions for your breakfast and leave all in the fridge, which will easily last you for at least a few days. Please provide us with some preferences for breakfast by email, when booking. We provide linen, toiletries and towels. The use of our facilities is at your own risk. Children must be supervised at all times. The hot tub and unheated outdoor swimming pool are open from mid May to mid October. The tennis court is open all year round and you can borrow racquets and balls for free. Most of the facilities are included in the price. The Himalayan salt sauna and housekeeping is at request and at an additional price. Please clarify on arrival. We will charge you for your booking on arrival and for any extras when you check out. We will require a photo ID on arrival.

There are several cafes, restaurants (Lingfield Tandoori, Thai Lounge, Bengal Village) , shops (Tesco, Coop, McColls), pubs (Greyhound, Star) within walking distance, which you might wish to try. There are many attractions nearby - British Wildlife Centre, Titsey Place, Standen, Sackville College, Tulleys Farm, Nymans, Wakehurst Place, Hever Castle, Knole, Bluebell Railway, Ashdown Forest, Chartwell, etc
